Virgil Abloh Securities' Design Firm ALASKA ALASKA Launches "Structural Sorcerer"
In partnership with Disney.
Always ready to question the role of design while designing, ALASKA ALASKA is uniquely placed between architecture, creative direction and research-based creativity. The London-based design firm, founded by Virgil Abloh, has an impressive list of collaborators ranging from Nike to Ikea. Now, the team adds Disney to its roaster to kick off Disney‘s Create 100 initiative amongst a group of visionary talent in film, music and art.
Athiththan Selvendran, COO of Virgil Abloh Securities tells us, “Create 100 is a celebration of some of the world’s most renowned creatives across the worlds of fashion, music and art, all of whom have created unique pieces and experiences that will help raise funds for Disney’s charity partner, Make-A-Wish. Each artist has used their own personal connection to Disney, its iconic stories, and adored characters, to design something that celebrates 100-years of Disney wonder, whilst looking ahead to emerging creative talent.”
For their contribution to the campaign, the ALASKA ALASKA team created a six-foot sculpture dubbed the “Sorcerer Sculpture” which was inspired by the Mickey Mouse illustration Virgil Abloh created in celebration of Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday.
Selvendran explains, “We wanted to bring an artwork that was originally created by Virgil himself into the world through innovative metalwork and craftsmanship, allowing Disney fans and future creatives to engage with the sculpture and be inspired by all that it represents.”
In addition to the “Sorcerer Sculpture” for Create 100, Virgil Abloh Securities also enlisted artist Favour Jonathan to create a sculpture of Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog.
As niche collectibles gain traction across the streetwear scope, the ALASKA ALASKA COO believes that brand affiliation and nostalgia play a big part, “When you develop a personal connection to a particular artist or brand, the possibility of owning something that they’ve created becomes even more desirable, especially as those items are usually harder to get hold of.”
Keep an eye on The Create 100 program as additional releases are set to launch this summer including contributions and recreations from Beyonce, Christian Louboutin and more.
