Coachtopia's "The Wasted Parts" Explores the Gen Z Consumption Dilemma

Bringing the fashion-forward and the climate-conscious together.

Coachtopia just launched its new “Alter/Ego” collection with a campaign that promotes sustainability and resourcefulness. Titled “The Wasted Parts,” the campaign showcases the new collection of bag silhouettes, crafted from leftover leather scraps that may have otherwise gone to landfill.

After the creation of Coach signatures like the Tabby, Hampton and Brooklyn bags, the leather offcuts are typically discarded and disposed of, but for Coachtopia, it’s an opportunity to repurpose them into something new. It’s that resourcefulness that “The Wasted Parts” looks to celebrate, continuing Coach’s mission to promote a circular economy in fashion.

Showcasing five new bag styles, each crafted from Coachtopia’s “checkerboard upcrafted leather” technique, which fuses small, irregular scraps in a specific pattern, the collection includes the Checkerboard Shoulder Bag, Hobo Bag, Satchel Bag, Mini Satchel and Wavy Baguette.

“Since we launched Coachtopia in April 2023, our mission has been to pioneer circularity in fashion by reimagining waste, design and the end of life of our products — and the Alter/Ego collection is another step forward in that mission,” says Joon Silverstein, Head of Coachtopia.

Starring actor and community member Lola Tung, the campaign sees her portray two versions of herself: one, a climate-conscious Coachtopian and the other, a fashion-forward Coach girl. By bringing these two versions together through the original Coach bag and its leather-offcuts counterpart, the campaign looks to bridge the gap between both ways of consuming.

“My generation is starting to really consider the impacts of their fashion choices, so I’m thrilled to help Coachtopia tell this story about production waste — and how we can transform how we think about it. I can relate to sometimes feeling torn between style and sustainability when it comes to fashion, so it was really interesting to play that out as these two different characters, and visually represent this duality in a beautiful and creative way,” Tung explains.
