HYPEBAE Radio Explores the Rise of the Secondhand Market in New Podcast Episode

Featuring upcycling designer Nicole McLaughlin and Depop’s Head of Marketing, Joan Costello.

The future of the fashion industry has reached a critical turning point as the global apparel market continues to produce waste from textiles and clothing at a startling rate. To combat these mounting issues, Gen Z consumers have taken up arms, forming online communities through apps like Depop that support the sustainability movement while driving the economic growth and development of secondhand apparel and resale fashion. In a world of overproduction, the next five years will witness the evolution of the secondhand market as the next class of change-makers and industry professionals contribute to the development, innovation and future of sustainability.

To further examine and discuss the rapidly growing new-age consumer behavior, HYPEBAE Radio and Target gathered industry experts Nicole McLaughlin, a designer who specializes in creating upcycled designs, and Joan Costello, the Head of Marketing at Depop for the third installment of “School of Sustainability.” In a candid conversation, the two examined and discussed the boom of resale fashion, their experiences with the secondhand market and how  they continue to actively pioneer its growth.

In this week’s episode titled “The Rise of the Secondhand Market,” Nicole and Joan speak openly on how Gen Z is driving the future of the secondhand market forward, advancements in technology that will play a part in finding sustainable solutions and promoting a new era of individuality through upcycling.

As a new generation of conscious consumers aim to reimagine the fashion system through community-driven apps that encourage users to connect by shopping secondhand or promoting upcycled garments and collections, the message behind today’s conversation indicates that through innovation and education we can collectively support a path to sustainability.
