The World's First Digital Condom Just Dropped — Here's How It Works
CAMDOM’s Creative Director Ricardo Wolff dives into the sex tech innovation and how to protect yourself in the digital world.
When discussing safe sex, sex education mainly focuses on IRL protection. But what about online protection? From deepfakes to revenge porn, the non-consensual distribution of explicit images has become an increasingly alarming issue. To help women protect themselves digitally, German condom brand BILLY BOY and the Innocean Berlin agency, partnered to create CAMDOM, the world’s first digital condom. In an interview with us, Innocean Berlin’s Creative Director Ricardo Wolff shares how to use the app and why it’s the leading sex tech innovation for women this year.

What was the moment that inspired the team to create a digital condom to combat revenge porn?
I’m of the firm belief that big ideas are nothing but brilliant answers to big problems. Now let’s look at revenge porn: this is a global crisis with numbers rising dramatically year on year, in some countries affecting 1 in 3 teens. As it happens with many topics related to tech, the solutions can’t keep up and often arrive too late. That’s why we’re proud to launch CAMDOM together with BILLY BOY. This is the first digital condom for the digital generation, available in just a few clicks, for free.
How can women use this app to protect themselves?
The beauty of CAMDOM lies in its simple interface. When two or more people are about to have an intimate moment, all they have to do is place their smartphones close to each other, and slide down the main icon in CAMDOM’s welcome screen to lock all cameras and microphones. If one is disconnected without consent, an alarm goes off. Just like you always need to walk around with a real condom in your pocket, have CAMDOM downloaded to your smartphone.
How many people can use the app at a time? Is this fit for group sex?
When developing CAMDOM, our goal was to develop a digital tool that could mirror the same scenarios of a real condom, so it not only works with two people but with as many as possible.
How many iterations did this app take to come to life?
We lost count, to be honest. I’d say the biggest challenge was to bridge the communication between iOS and Android via Bluetooth – a feat that has never been done before. And just like that, now 5 billion people worldwide can use CAMDOM.
Are there any other ways CAMDOM supports women’s sex lives?
Even though it’s an extraordinary thing to launch the world’s first digital condom, the app also offers another essential form of protection: a real condom. And that’s because users can purchase BILLY BOY condoms from inside the app.
