Florencia Montefalcone Wants You To Face Your Fears
Now on view.
San Francisco-based textile artist, Florencia Montefalcone, teases her first solo exhibition.
Known for exploring the objectification of nude female bodies and the preconceived notions of beauty, Montefalcone’s “Why Are We So Afraid?” invites her audience to question how we view empowerment.
From July 11 to August 4, SUDESTADA will act as gallery and residency, where she’ll finish “one of her largest hand-painted pieces.” The piece is almost 10 meters large, and acts as a collaboration between the artist and public “while reflecting on fear and encouraging everyone to befriend their own.” The exhibit is essentially a moment to transform fears into “catalysts for growth and self-discovery.”

As Montefalcone revealed in the exclusive press release: “I have realized that the most important things I’ve made, I’ve been absolutely terrified of doing in the first place. Every performance, photograph, speech or artwork that has filled me with trepidation before its creation or exhibition has turned out to be the most significant. These projects, where I lay bare my vulnerabilities and confront my fears, have sparked the most profound and nourishing conversations with peers and mentors.”
Additionally, the exhibition will present a limited edition capsule collection “of unseen fashion pieces made entirely with the artist hand-painted silks. Think second skin silky boots, flowy cover ups that follow the woman’s body and bold statement everyday accessories at the intersection of fashion and art.”
