Kitty Ca$h's "Handle With Care" Exhibition Brings Communal Healing to NYC

With Martine Syms and Jenée-Daria Strand.

On November 6, multimedia artist Kitty Ca$h expanded her “Handle With Care” exhibition into an emotive panel for healing.

Hosted at the Hannah Traore Gallery, the intimate panel took place the day after the United States election. “I feel like I landed today in New York City with a very heavy heart,” Ca$h told us. “And this feels so timely,” she continued, “being able to express my worries, concerns and fears for the coming years.”

On view until November 16, 2024, “Handle With Care” is the artist’s first installation. Designed as a mail room, guests can visit the exhibition and leave “emotional mail” as a mode of healing. “The act of putting pen to paper offers a tactile experience,” the show notes shared, “encouraging the audience to reclaim their emotional and physical space, and reconnect with their body. In an era when digital communication supersedes physical mail and letter-writing, this exhibition serves as a sanctuary for marginalized communities.” Since its launch, over 200 people have participated.

Originally launched as an album before the showcase, Ca$h’s installation takes on a new form yet again, this time as a panel held with American artist Martine Syms.

When asked what inspired her to host this event — especially during such a critical political time, she closed: “I would like to lead with a quote that I held very close to me while making this installation, which says ‘It’s very rare that we heal in isolation’ and ‘Healing is communal’ by bell hooks. I feel it’s important to reiterate that healing is communal and we do have each other to lean on and just let it out.”

Visit the exhibit until November 16 in NYC.
